The engine (1) has a connecting shaft arranged between a crankshaft (2) and a transmission input shaft (10). A clutch (4) is arranged between the crankshaft and the connecting shaft. A sliding fit is attached to a clutch release sleeve of a shifting device (11), where the clutch release sleeve is connected with a membrane disk (16) of the clutch. The clutch release sleeve is displaceably guided to the crankshaft by the sliding fit in a direct or indirect manner. A spring element i.e. spring bellows, encloses an end of the membrane disk. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a combustion engine.
