A water supply apparatus for a drum type washing machine is provided to shorten the washing time by directly injecting the detergent water supplied via a detergent box to the laundry contained in a drum. A water supply apparatus for a drum type washing machine includes a cabinet(30), a tub(42), a drum(44), a supply pipe(56), a detergent box(58), a direct water supply box, an opening/closing valve, and a detection unit. A front panel having an opening part is installed in the cabinet. The tub is installed inside the opening part and washing water is collected in the tub. The drum is rotatably installed inside the tub to receive the laundry. A water supply pipe inserted from the outside of the cabinet is connected to the supply pipe. A valve is installed in the supply pipe to supply washing water. The detergent box is installed at an end of the supply pipe to resolve the detergent in the washing water. The direct water supply box is connected to the detergent box. A predetermined amount of detergent water is contained in the direct water supply box. In the direct water supply box, a discharge opening part extends in the inward direction of the drum. The opening/closing valve is installed inside the discharge opening part. If more than a predetermined amount of detergent water is supplied into the direct water supply box, the detection unit closes the valve by sensor unit.
