[Also in Division F2] A regulating device, for regulating exhalation gas flow in an exhalation conduit of a respiratory apparatus for anaesthetizing, consists of a housing 2 divided into chambers 8, 10 and 12 by two walls 5 and 6. both of which walls have apertures therein for receiving, in sliding engagement, an internally threaded sleeve member 13. An externally threaded spindle 14, mounted in this sleeve; has attached to one of its ends a rod 15 carrying a member 17, for closing aperture 3, and a hand wheel 16, for turning the spindle within its sleeve. At the other end is mounted a rod 18 carrying, in slideable engagement, a closure disc 19 for abutting valve seat 23 and hence closing duct 4. Compression springs 20 and 25 tend to retain the device in the position shown. A pressure responsive membrane 7 is firmly attached to both the housing 2 and sleeve 13. A patients breathing organs are connected to duct 4 and hence through members 12, 11 and 10 to a negative pressure line 1. If greater resistance to exhalation is desired, the wheel 16 is rotated so raising member 17 and opening chamber 10 to atmosphere. Further rotation in the same sense would result in member 19 abutting seat 23 with a force which would be dependant on the loading on spring 20 as applied by the spindle. If the resistance is to be increased still further, a controllable positive pressure pulse may be applied through duct 9 to act on the membrane 7. Thus, by suitable rotation of the spindle supplemented by positive pressure pulses, the patients breathing organs may be subjected to a range of pressures extending from negative to positive valves. |
