The present invention relates to a method for authenticating a user, the user having a first client device being connected to an application server by means of a first communication link, wherein a second client device is used for authentication purposes of the user, the second client device being able to communicate with an authentication device by means of a second communication link, wherein the application server requests the authentication of the user for providing a service to the user, wherein the method comprises the steps of:
-- the application server sends an authentication request information to the first client device,
-- the authentication request information is transmitted at least partly from the first client device to the second client device in an automatic manner,
-- an authentication reply information is transmitted from the second client device to the authentication device, and at least partly from the authentication device to the application server.
