[Also in Division A2] Malic acid is freed from contamination with unsaturated acids such as maleic and fumaric acids by contacting the aqueous solution with hydrogen in the presence of a metal hydrogenation catalyst to convert the unsaturated acids to succinic acid. The product may be filtered, decolourized and spray dried and may contain 0À5 to 5% succinic acid, and is used in animal foodstuffs as an acidulant. Examples describe the use of a palladium on charcoal catalyst.</p> |
