Protection against accidental fracture of a centrifuge rotor 14 when rotated at high speed is provided by an enclosure consisting of a vertical cylindrical wall 12 mounted on a horizontal base-plate 21 and secured internally at its bottom, e.g. by welding, to an anchor ring 26 which extends partially between the base-plate 21 and a horizontal circular plate 28 mounted on the base-plate 21 with its outer peripheral portion spaced apart from the base-plate and from the wall 12. The ring 26 is attached to the base-plate 21 by a number of shear pins or bolts 25. The plate 28 is annular and is secured by bolts 29 to an annular boss 27 formed on the base-plate 21. The rotor 14 is driven through a shaft 16 by a motor supported in a ring 18 mounted on an annular lip 22 in an aperture in the base-plate 21. A lip seal 33 secured to the plate 28 bears on the shaft housing 17. A resilient ring 38 is placed between the plate 28 and the wall 12 to act as a seal and as a sound-absorbing medium. The open end of the wall 12 is enclosed by a cover 43 pivoted on the wall at 49 and locked in position by means of a hook 50 and a latch 52, 53. The cover is provided with an inwardlyextending annular lip 46 which rests on the bottom of an annular recess in the wall 12 and is spaced from the vertical wall 41 of the recess. The wall 12 is made of steel which is sufficiently ductile to allow bulging out of the wall under moderate impacts of rotor fragments should the rotor fracture accidentally during highspeed rotation. In case of severe impacts the pins or bolts 25 are sheared and outward movement of the wall 12 provides a shock-absorbing action. This outward movement is stopped as the wall 41 of the recess engages the lip 46 of the cover. Pivotal movement of the wall is prevented by the ring 26 engaging with the plate 28. |
