An outboard propulsion unit 2 is provided which comprises a chassis suitable for being attached to the stern of a kayak. The unit comprises a four stroke fuel consuming engine 12, a generator 14 and at least one electrical cell 16. The engine 12 drives the generator 14, which is electrically connected to the electrical cell 16. A sensor 22 is provided for detecting when the level of energy in the electrical cell 16 drops below a given threshold. A starter 18 is provided in communication with the sensor 22 for starting the engine 12 when the drop in energy levels is detected, for the generator 14 to boost the energy levels of the cell 16. The unit also comprises a propeller assembly (28 see fig 2) mounted via a telescopic shaft (40 see fig 2) and including a propeller (26 see fig 2) and a brushless electric motor (30 see fig 2) powered by the electric cell 16 for driving the propeller (26). The invention also comprises a kayak, comprising the outboard propulsion unit 2. The unit 2 functions as a series hybrid and enables power to last for longer than an outboard motor which is simply battery powered.
