An apparatus comprising two cylinders 1 and 2 in which the seals between pistons 3 and 4 and the cylinders 1 and 2 are formed by rolling diaphragms 9 and 10 respectively, has annular spaces 11 and 12 each filled with liquid under the diaphragms respectively, a supply duct 13 for the liquid connected to the space 11 and a control device 16 which maintains a constant pressure difference across each rolling diaphragm. The spaces 11 and 12 communicate with one another through a duct 14 and the pressure control device 16 allows liquid to flow away from the apparatus to maintain the constant pressure difference across the diaphragms as the pistons vary the volumes of the working spaces 7 and 8. In a plurality of devices the liquid filled spaces are connected in series so that only one control device is required. |
