A washing machine and a method for controlling the same are provided to reduce vibration of a water tub by checking vibration of the water tub when dehydrating laundry and lowering RPM of a motor if sensed vibration of the motor is over a set vibration and then re-increasing RPM of the motor. A method for controlling a washing machine comprises the steps of: sensing vibration of a water tub caused by operation of a motor when dehydrating laundry; comparing the sensed vibration of the water tub with a set vibration and lowering RPM of the motor if the sensed vibration of the water tub is over the set vibration; and re-increasing RPM of the motor and performing a dehydration process.
