The device (10) has a row of electromagnets (11) that is movable in a vertical direction with lateral play between a retracted position and a braking position. The row of electromagnets is applied against a rail (1) of a track. A guide element (20) provided integral with the row of electromagnets extends vertically on one side and below the row of electromagnets. The guide element is brought in contact with one side (1a) of the rail during movement of the row of electromagnets between its retracted position and braking position for positioning of the row of electromagnets on the rail.
