PURPOSE: A display device and a backlight operating method thereof are provided to control brightness of each light source to make brightness of backlight, which is irradiated from a backlight unit, uniform at a location of a light source. CONSTITUTION: A display panel(133) displays an image. A backlight unit(136) comprises a plurality of light sources. The backlight unit irradiates backlight onto the display panel. A control unit(140) controls the light sources to operate the light sources by a method by which an image is scanned on the display panel. The control unit controls brightness of each light source to make brightness of backlight, which is irradiated from the backlight unit, uniform at a location of each light source.
