A planing machine comprises a reciprocating work-table 4, movable on a bed 3, gate-shaped columns 5, a cross rail 7 slidable and rockable on the columns by hydraulic pistons 6, a facing cutter assembly 8 slidable on the cross rails, and a fixed side cutter 9. A template 14 is provided on each side of the table and is shaped to conform to the shape of the upper face of the workpiece 10 to be machined, so that during planing all of the upper surface will be machined. An hydraulic controller for operating pistons 6 is controlled by a follower 16 which co-operates with the template. Cutter assembly 8 comprises tool heads 21-24 which carry tools 25, 26, and the heads are moved laterally by a lead screw 18. At the end of each stroke of the work-table, each of the heads 21, 24, along with its tools, can be moved vertically, by a template and follower 27, 28, so as to remove material from the edge of the upper face of workpiece 10. |
