The invention comprises azo dyes of formula <FORM:1014404/C4-C5/1> wherein R is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or aralkyl radical and A is an aromatic-carbocyclic or -heterocyclic radical, which may be substituted by an azo group, and the naphthalene ring and A and R may be substituted other than by sulphonic or carboxylic acid groups. The dyes are prepared by cyclizing a compound of formula <FORM:1014404/C4-C5/2> or an ester or amide thereof, by the action of a condensing agent and, if desired, alkylating or aralkylating the dye so obtained. Specified condensation agents are formic, acetic, chloroacetic, tartaric, lactic, citric, hydrochloric, sulphuric and phosphoric acids, acetic anhydride, phosphorus oxychloride and acetyl thionyl and sulphuryl chlorides. The dyes may be used to colour synthetic polyester, polyamide, polyurethane, polystyrene, polyolefine and cellulose ester materials in the mass in yellow or red shades. In examples, the preparation of mono and dis-azo dyes is described, some of which are further treated with dimethyl or diethyl sulphate, N-n-butyl-N-21-chloroethylaniline, benzyl chloride and its 4-methyl-, 4-methoxy-, 4-ethoxy-, 4-phenoxy-, 4-nitro-, 4-chloro-, 3,4-dichloro- and 4-phenyl-derivatives, chloroacetic acid ethyl ester or 2-dimethylaminoand diethylamino-ethyl chloride. |
