<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a portable terminal and a method for operating a processing apparatus which enable an intuitive operation of a processing apparatus such as an image forming apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The portable terminal having a display section includes: a position identification section for identifying the position of the terminal; a direction identification section for identifying the direction of the terminal; and a control section for identifying a predetermined processing apparatus present within a predetermined distance range of the terminal and in the specified direction of the terminal according to position information of one or more processing apparatuses stored beforehand, and displaying on the display section an operation screen for remote operation of the predetermined processing apparatus.
