Equipment for mining and excavating includes a bucket used to remove overburden, a boom for positioning the bucket, and a hoist and drag cable for controlling the bucket. The equipment also includes a drum; a pedestal, a pinion assembly, and a cartridge assembly. The drum is used to wind the hoist cable or the drag cable. The pedestal supports the drum and surrounds a bull gear attached to the drum. A pinion of the pinion assembly extends within a port in the pedestal to engage the bull gear. The cartridge assembly is attached to the pedestal and includes an electric motor having a shaft extending from the motor, and a gear reduction coupled to the motor shaft. The pinion assembly is driven by the motor via the gear reduction.
