摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low sulfur, low ash, low phosphorous lubricant composition for improved fuel economy and retention of fuel economy and wear and friction reduction, and to provide a method for lubricating an internal combustion engine. <P>SOLUTION: A formulation using a tartaric acid derivative in a low sulfur, low ash, and low phosphorous lubricant agent reduces wear and friction and improves fuel economy. The low-sulfur, low-phosphorus, low-ash lubricating oil composition is comprised of one or more base oils which are generally present in a major amount (i.e., an amount greater than about 50 percent by weight). There is also provided a method for lubricating an internal combustion engine.
