Provided is a method with which it is possible to produce, using readily available materials, a sulfur-based positive pole active substance capable of improving the charge-discharge capacity and cycle properties of a lithium ion secondary battery. The mixed starting material for the sulfur-based positive pole active substance is formed from sulfur and at least one type of carbon material selected from the group comprising coal pitch, petroleum pitch, mesophase pitch, asphalt, coal tar, coal tar pitch, organic synthetic pitch obtained by polycondensation of a condensed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon compound, and organic synthetic pitch obtained by polycondensation of a hetero atom-containing condensed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon compound, and this mixed starting material is heated in such a way that at least a portion of the carbon material and at least a portion of the sulfur form a liquid. |
