DATA PROCESSING DEVICE, VARIABLE LENGTH ENCODING DEVICE, AND VARIABLE LENGTH DECODING DEVICE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize small scale, high speed and low power consumption variable length encoding and decoding compliant with various international standards.

SOLUTION: Cells are provided in such a number as to match types of bit values represented by fixed length n bits, and the bit values are assigned to the respective cells as unique comparison target values. Each cell compares n-bit input data with the comparison target value and outputs a match signal if they match. On a search tree compliant with any encoding or decoding scheme in which any bit value within n bits is assigned to each node of each hierarchical level, an address decoder 32 and a table control section 36 follow the hierarchical levels of the search tree downward as identifying on each hierarchical level the node of the same bit value as the comparison target value of the cell that has output the match signal and concatenate the node values to generate an encoding value or decoding value. As for a comparison of less than n bits, whichever matching cell having the same bit pattern over comparison bits of the comparison target value is associated with the same node.
