1,137,029. Treating gases with discharges. DIAMOND ALKALI CO. 12 April, 1967 [14 April, 1966], No. 16867/67. Heading C1A. [Also in Divisions C5 and H5] A reactor for the electrical-arc-promoted production of chemical materials has feed inlets 20 to a central zone 2 of the discharge zone 3 between spaced electrodes 18, 19 for a primary gas or fluidized solid entrained in a gaseous vehicle, and secondary gas introduction ports 8, 13, downstream from zone 2 such that a secondary gas is bled into and flows along the walls 7, 14 of zone 3 forming a sheath around the primary gas, the reactor having gas discharge passages 15, 16 (see also Divisions H3-H5). Suitable feedstocks including nitrogen, for the preparation of cyanogen, hydrogen cyanide, nitrogen oxides, hydrazine, titanium nitride or tungsten nitride; hydrogen, for the preparation of hydrogen cyanide, acetylene, metallic aluminium from aluminium oxide and titanium nitride from titanium tetrachloride; ammonia, for the preparation of titanium nitride and hydrogen cyanide; oxygen, for the preparation of acetylene or nitrogen oxides; as well as fluidized solid reactants such as carbon, aluminium oxide, titanium metal powder and tungsten metal powder entrained in a gas.
