<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an article of footwear which includes an upper and a sole assembly 14 secured to the upper. <P>SOLUTION: The sole assembly includes a first portion 26 having a lower ground engaging surface, an upper surface 27, and a recess 28 formed in the upper surface. The upper surface of the first portion is in contact with the upper. A second portion 36 is seated in the recess in the first portion and has an upper surface 42, with the upper surface of the second portion being in contact with the upper.
