The method involves indirectly connecting wheels (FR, FL, RR, RL) with a body (3) over a wheel suspension (2). Distance (d) between two of the wheels and the wheel suspension is abruptly increased by an actuator (1) such that normal force (FN) acting on the wheels is increased. The actuator is designed as an active pneumatic spring damper unit. Operation of the actuator is triggered when a control device recognizes an inevitable accident situation. An environment sensor system is equipped with a motor car for recognizing the inevitable accident situation. An independent claim is also included for a device for reducing velocity of a motor car.
