The method involves detecting vibration characteristics of a component of a machine by detecting impact sound signals using a vibration sensor. A lubricant property i.e. particle content of lubricant, of the machine is measured by a lubricant detector. A status of the machine is automatically investigated by evaluating both the vibration characteristics and the lubricant property using an evaluation unit. The vibration sensor and the lubricant detector are arranged in a common housing. An independent claim is also included for a device for investigating a status of a machine, comprising a vibration sensor.
