Verfahren zur Herstellung von Methacrylsaeure

Methacrylic acid is prepared by reacting methacrylonitrile with at least sufficient sulphuric acid to give a mole ratio of sulphuric acid to methacrylonitrile of 1:1 and at least sufficient water to provide a mole ratio of water to methacrylonitrile of 2:1. The reaction may be at elevated temperatures and a two-stage process is preferred. Copper sulphate pentahydrate is also included in reaction exemplified.
