A blast furnace, which may operate with oxygen enriched air, has associated with it a blast heater and a regenerative heater which supplies conversion products of hydrocarbon gas to the furnace, the conversion being effected either by water vapour or by carbon dioxide of the furnace top gas. In the embodiment illustrated, blast is supplied alternately through heaters 2 to furnace 3, while hydrocarbon gas and furnace gas are reacted in heaters 3, the products also being fed to the furnace. A part of the furnace gas is used in the reaction, and a further part for combustion in the heaters while the remainder may be used in the synethesis of ammonia.</p> |
