The invention relates to a method and measuring device for detecting an object in a hatch opening (1) which can be closed by a movable hatch cover (2), in particular on a military vehicle, the device having an excitation electrode (9) for generating a field, in particular with respect to a metal body of the vehicle, and a measuring electrode (10.1) for determining field variations caused by the object, the field being generated when the hatch cover (2) is closed in dependence upon the position thereof.
