The method involves measuring attenuation of an infrared measuring beam (5) in a wall section (7) of a container (3) e.g. brown glass bottle, and imaging the wall section in transmitted light of a camera image (13), where the wall section is set at bottom (3a) of the container. Comparison or correction value for measured attenuation is calculated based on brightness value of the camera image. The brightness value is averaged over an evaluation region of the camera image, where the evaluation region corresponds to the wall section. The container is colored and made of stained glass. An independent claim is also included for a device for recognizing residual liquid in a container.
