<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide methods and compositions for the inhibition of gene expression, in particular, oligonucleotide-based therapeutics for the inhibition of oncogenes involved in cancers. <P>SOLUTION: The composition comprises an oligonucleotide that hybridizes under physiological conditions to a promoter region of a bcl-3 gene. At least one of cytosine bases in the oligonucleotide is 5-methylcytosine. The hybridization of the oligonucleotide to the promoter region of the gene inhibits expression of the gene. The gene is on a chromosome of a cell, and the hybridization of the oligonucleotide to the promoter region of gene reduces proliferation of the cell. The composition further comprises another oligonucleotide. At least one of cytosine bases in the other oligonucleotide is 5-methylcytosine.
