The relay (1) has a start input (4) switching ON the relay when a mass (S22) is applied on the start input and starting voltage (S12) applied on the start input is removed. An opened emergency stop circuit (2) switches OFF the relay. The start input is connected with an anode of a breakdown diode and a cathode of another breakdown diode, where the breakdown diodes are switched in series. An anode of the latter breakdown diode is connected with an anode of an optical coupler whose cathode is connected with the mass through a capacitor. An independent claim is also included for a method for switching a safety relay.
