The apparatus has an electrical line system (12) for supplying power to an electrical prime mover (13) by using a power generation unit (10) and/or an energy store unit (11). A diagnostic apparatus (14) is coupled to a control and/or regulating unit that detects and recognizes an error condition. A fail-safe device (15) is provided in an operating mode to re-establish or maintain the power supply for the electrical prime mover as a function of the recognized error condition. The power generation unit is designed as a fuel cell unit. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a driving apparatus for a motor car.
