In machines for interlacing the fibres of a more or less loose wad of material with one another or with a base of fabric, or both, by means of a series of barbed needles 1 passing through a stripper 20 to penetrate the material, which is prevented by the stripper from being lifted by the needles, either the stripper or the bed 12 over which the material is fed between needle strokes, or each of these members, is moved away from the other of these members to facilitate feeding of the work. In the arrangement shown the stripper is hinged at 21 to a bracket on the bed and is adjustably connected at the opposite side to a link 24 attached to a member 25 adjustable on the bar 3 carrying the needles, so that as the needles rise the stripper is also lifted at a slower rate. In a modification, Fig. 1 (not shown), the stripper is vertically slidable on the needle-carrying bar 3 and is pressed downwards by adjustable springs means being provided to lift it with the bar 3, after the needles have left the work. In another modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the bed is hinged at one side, a counterbalancing arm being provided, and is oscillated by mechanism in time with the needles.
