Improvements in and relating to the production of artificial filaments, threads and the like by a continuous spinning process

Artificial thread is obtained by extruding a fibre-forming solution through a multi-hole jet into a coagulating bath, and the thread is withdrawn on to a rotating thread take-up device and subjected, continuously with the process of thread formation, to liquid treatment while it is travelling over and along a number of rotating thread-storage, thread-advancing reels, a false-twist being imparted to it during its passage from the first of such treatment reels by leading it directly against the edge of a smooth annular guide surrounding and rotating with the second reel, which is rotating in the opposite direction to the first reel. The false-twist reduces the tendency for some of the component filaments to become separated from the thread. The smooth annular guide should be the only surface making frictional contact with the thread during its passage from the first reel to the second reel in order that the false twist may be imparted effectively. This guide may take the form of a cowl surrounding the receiving end of the second reel and its diameter may be about 1 inch greater than that of the reel. If desired, a similar arrangement for imparting a false twist may be provided at each of the reels. The thread may be dried while on the spinning-machine and then collected in the form of a package, or a number of threads may be collected into a bundle for subsequent conversion into staple fibre. The process is applicable to the production of artificial threads from viscose, cuprammonium cellulose solutions, casein solutions or cellulose acetate solutions. It may be used in the production of high denier multi-filament thread for use in making motor tyres. As shown, a multi-filament thread 7 travelling continuously from a coagulating bath passes to reel 1 and travels round and along the reel in helical turns. Dilute sulphuric acid is sprayed from pipe 10 on to the thread on reel 1. The thread 7 passes directly from reel 1 to the edge of the smooth annular guide 8 before passing to reel 2, which is rotating in the opposite direction to reel 1. The annular guide imparts a false twist to the thread. The thread is treated with water from pipe 11. From reel 2, the thread passes through guide 9 to reel 3, where it is treated with liquid from pipe 12. Specifications 413,413, 413,414, [Group IX], 474,973 and 653,363 are referred to.
