The method involves capturing an electrical signal (S1) at the receiving electrode (EE), and operating a sensor device in a primary operating mode and in a secondary operating mode. The transmission electrode (SE) in the primary operating mode is impinged with an alternating electric signal (WS1) and the compensation electrode (KE) is impinged with another alternating electric signal (WS2). The cover section of a hand-held device is detected, when the electrical signal exceeds the threshold value. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a sensor device for detecting a cover section of a hand-held device; and (2) a program code for a data carrier product.
