<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shift operating device that allows a driver to select a desired shift range from among multiple shift ranges, and also, to execute safe and comfortable shift operations. <P>SOLUTION: The shift operating device 1 includes a rotary knob selector 2, a first detecting unit 3, a shift range switch 6, a second detecting unit 7, an actuator 4, and a control section 5.
