METHOD OF MANUFACTURING MAGNETIC RECORDING MEDIUM, AND MAGNETIC RECORDING AND REPRODUCING DEVICE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a magnetic recording medium on which a magnetically isolated magnetic recording pattern is formed that includes no complicated manufacturing process while a surface of a magnetic layer is neither oxidized nor halogenated and not contaminated with dust.

SOLUTION: There is provided a method of manufacturing a magnetic recording medium having a magnetically isolated magnetic recording pattern, and the method includes in order the processes of: forming a magnetic layer 2 on a nonmagnetic substrate 1; forming a mask layer 3 made of carbon for forming a magnetic recording pattern on the magnetic layer 2; irradiating a part 7 of the magnetic layer 2 which is not covered with the mask layer 3 with an ion beam 10 including hydrogenated carbon ions to form cobalt carbide as a nonmagnetic body on the magnetic layer 2; and removing the mask layer 3.
