A vented tubular ink reservoir 3 for a ballpoint pen has at least one peripheral and continuous groove 12, Fig. 1, (24879/48) or step 30, Fig. 1 (14782/49). formed on or in the inner surface thereof and located between the vent 9 and that end 11 of the ink column adjacent thereto when the tube is charged with ink, such step or groove affording a sharp change in direction of movement to ink tending to flow axially relatively thereto. Ink is thus prevented from leaking from the tube. The grooves may be provided in split rings which are then inserted into the tube. The liquid column may be surmounted by a layer of another liquid which is more viscous, or a piston or float may rest on the liquid column adjacent the grooves &c.
