Pyridine bases are obtained by reacting acetaldehyde or crotonaldehyde with formaldehyde and ammonia in the vapour phase in the presence of a catalyst, the reaction mixture being diluted with 25-80 mol. per cent of an inert gas. The preferred catalysts are silicaalumina catalysts, to which salts of zinc, cobalt, cadmium, magnesium or lead may be added as promoters. The specified inert gases include steam and methanol. The reaction may be effected at 300-600‹ C. Examples are given.
