A mechanically worked detergent bar comprises soap, non-soap detergent or a mixture of soap and non-soap detergent, and additionally contains from 0.2-5% by weight of particulate material distributed in a substantially uniform fashion throughout said bar, said particulate material having a size range from 0.2 mm. to 2.0 mm. and being contrasting in colour from the remainder of the bar whereby the bar has a speckled appearance. Soaps specified include alkali metal salts of the higher fatty acids of naturally occurring plant or animal esters, or of synthetically produced fatty acids. Non-soap detergents specified include alkylaryl sulphonates, alkyl glyceryl ether sulphonates, alkyl ethylene oxide ether sulphates, acyl N-methyl taurides, alkyl sulphonates and sulphates, acyl isothionates, acyl monoglyceride sulphates and sulphonates and salt of a -sulphonated fatty acids and their esters.
