A sensitive photographic material comprises a support bearing a layer of silver halide emulsion whereof the silver halide contains at least 60 mole % of silver chloride and either this layer or an adjacent water-permeable layer contains a water-soluble block polymer of polyoxypropylene and polyoxyethylene in which the polyoxypropylene moiety has an average molecular weight of from 800 to 3000 and of which the polyoxyethylene units constitute from 10 to 70% by weight. The block polymer may comprise the residue of a polybasic acid, a polyhydroxy compound, a polyamine, a polyamide or a polythiol obtained by removal of 2 or more hydrogen atoms and/or an alkyl, alkyl carbonyl, aryl carbonyl or alkaryl carbonyl group at the end of a chain. The emulsions may contain quaternary ammonium, phosphonium and sulphonium salts to increase speed (see Specifications 557,178; 556, 457; 556,458; 558, 710; 874, 082 and 911, 501). |
