The controller (10) has a main-processor (12) receiving signals by sensors (S1, S2) and delivering control signals. An application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) (14) receives signals from the main-processor and passes the control signals to a power electronic circuit (16). The ASIC receives the sensor signals and operates in place of the main-processor in case of defect or failure of the main-processor to output the control signals. The ASIC is directly coupled with the sensors and transmits the sensor signals to the main-processor. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling an electric motor for an electrical power steering unit.
