An AC power switching module comprises: AC current input (V1) and output (V5) means; a thyristor (17) located between said input and output means for selectively blocking or passing said AC current, said thyristor having a gate input (V4) for activating said thyristor to cause said AC current to pass; and activation means for sending a pulsed activation signal (V4) to said gate input and thus activate said thyristor, said activation means being caused to send said activation signal upon receipt of an enabling command signal. The activation means comprises means for, upon receipt of an enabling command signal (14), gradually increasing the duty cycle of the activation signal until it reaches a steady value.
Said means are a zero crossing point detector (12), a sawtooth waveform generator (13), a ramp generator circuit (15) and a comparator (16).
