PURPOSE: A depth image obtaining apparatus and a method thereof are provided to extract a pattern light projection area from a scene image and to supply the extracted area to the depth image obtaining apparatus. CONSTITUTION: An image receiving unit(120) receives a scene image. An image which is reflected according to the irradiation of a pattern light is the scene image. An area extracting unit(130) extracts a patterned light transmitting area from the scene image by using the variation of a channel according to time.
