In a fluid-shear coupling for driving an engine cooling fan and comprising driving and driven rotary members 11, 42 with interengaging lands 56 providing the shear surfaces, the flow of fluid between the reservoir 60 and working chamber 40 is controlled by an axially movable pumping or deflector element 85 carried at the end of a radial arm 80. Normally, element 85 is held clear of reservoir 60, passing through a slot 86 in a partition disc 53 into a recess 88 in member 11 in the region of ports 89 located beyond lands 56, but in the event of a temperature rise a bi-metallic element 76 moves a spring-loaded axial plunger 77 to the right and rotates arm 80 to withdraw element 85 from recess 88 into a position in which it deflects fluid in reservoir 60 through a port 92 in disc 53 into the working chamber 40. The disc 53 is also provided with an opening 95 located inwardly of element 85 and engaged by a plug 96 which is withdrawn as element 85 moves to the left to assist in filling chamber 40 as the load torque increases, and also serving to prevent " droop " or loss of fan speed at high slip. In a modification, the flow control port 92 is integral with slot 86 in disc 53. Cooling fins 48 are provided. |
