In a cotton card, dust and reps generated in the region of the taker-in 3, the entry to the flats 5 and the doffer comb 7 are withdrawn through horizontally extending slots 13 in suction tubes 8, 9 and 10. In the vicinity of the underlying floor, waste fibre produced by the taker-in 3 and main cylinder 4 is entrained by an air current created by a suction mouthpiece 11 extending over the entire width of the machine and of effective cross-section regulated according to the position of a vertically displaceable portion 12<SP>1</SP> of a guide plate. The aspirated waste is delivered by a fan assembly 15 through conduits 16, 17 and 18 to a filter 20 in a casing 19 from which a conduit 22 (opposite an inspection door 21) returns a portion e.g. two thirds, of the air into the region of mouthpiece 11 to provide, under the control of a damper 27, a balanced air circuit, and an elbow directs the remaining air delivered by the fan to a cloth filter sleeve 24 (reinforced by rings and opening into a box 25) and to atmosphere. Periodic and/or automatic opening of a servomotor operated valve 26 discharges dust circulating temporarily under the machine in the space between conduit 22 and mouthpiece 11 and the waste held in readiness in casing 19 and from the inner surface of filter 24 into the suction manifold 28 of a pneumatic conveyor device (not shown) serving a number of machines. A modification, Fig. 4 (not shown) comprises an auxiliary conduit connecting another suction mouthpiece to the box 25 (in this case partitioned) for periodic removal of card flats waste under the control of a shut-off valve mounted on an extended spindle of valve 26 and operating in unison therewith. In another modification, Fig. 6 (not shown) waste collected by tubes 8, 9, 10 and mouthpiece 11 are delivered through conduit 18 into the sleeve filter 24 which constitutes a temporary collecting station. A flapvalve in a three way connection pipe is normally held closed by pressure of air delivered from fan 15 so that mouthpiece 11 is not directly connected with sleeve 24: accumulated waste is periodically and automatically removed to a central pneumatic conveying device and the change in air pressure opens the flap-valve so that additional suction occurs at mouthpiece 11.</p>
