摘要 <p>Compensation offsets are provided for a set of reconstructed samples of an image. Each sample, which may be a pixel or group of pixels, has a sample value. A classification 814 is selected from among a plurality of classifications and the selection may be based on rate-distortion criteria. Each classification has a smaller range, for example one half or one eight of, the full range of the sample values and comprises a plurality of classes. Each class defines a range of sample values within the classification range, into which class a sample is put if its sample value is within the range of the class concerned. A compensation offset is associated with each class of the selected classification for application to the sample value of each sample of the class. Methods and devices for encoding and decoding an image are also disclosed, along with a video bitstream signal. A loop filtering 806 process for reducing artifacts, comprising the selection of a group of edge offset values from a plurality of values, is also disclosed along with an area-by-area loop filtering process that can be disabled for certain images.</p>
