1,128,838. Nuclear fuel. UNITED STATES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMISSION. 1 July, 1966 [11 Aug., 1965], No. 29664/65. Heading G6C. In the preparation of a PnO 2 -UO 2 mixture for nuclear fuel element fabrication, a solution containing Pn and U in a mole concentration ratio of between 0.82 and 1.22 is treated with ammonium hydroxide to precipitate a mixture of uranium and plutonium hydrous oxides, and the precipitate is filtered, washed, dried, and heated in a hydrogen atmosphere at 600- 900‹ C. to reduce the mixture to oxide. The precipitate is more readily filtered and dried than precipitates in which the Pn and U molar concentrations differ. Ammonia is added to an aqueous solution of uranyl nitrate and plutonium nitrate to form a flocculent precipitate which after drying is reduced in hydrogenhelium. The product may be mixed with UO 2 or PnO 2 to adjust the Pn: U ratio, and then compacted and sintered to form fuel pellets.
|
