The device has a camera (112) provided on a vehicle for photographing a parking area, and a user interface unit (116) receiving an input of a start point as a desired parking position in the parking area by a driver. A parking space detecting unit (114) receives input images from the camera and the start point from the user interface unit. The detecting unit detects a number of dividing line segments in a direction of a guide line to detect the guide line and the dividing line segment as the parking space.
