PURPOSE: A motor-driven compressor and a controller therefor are provided to reduce a possibility of electric leakage and to compress refrigerants and discharge the compressed refrigerants to the outside. CONSTITUTION: A motor-driven compressor(10) comprises a main body and a motor(M). The main body compresses refrigerants and discharges the compressed refrigerants to the outside. The motor comprises a rotary shaft and powers the main body through the rotary shaft. A coil of the motor is arranged on an area of the motor-driven compressor containing the refrigerants. A motor controller comprises a determination unit and a modulation controller. The determination unit determines whether the refrigerants exist on the refrigerant containing area. The modulation controller powers the motor based on the results from the determination unit.
