<p>The invention relates to the use of semuloparin or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof as an antithrombotic treatment in a patient undergoing major abdominal surgery, wherein said use is effective and safe in the prevention of major venous thromboembolism events, such as proximal deep vein thrombosis.</p>
