The present invention relates to TGF-beta in the development of conventional dendritic cells and the production of IFN-lambda by such conventional dendritic cells. The invention also relates to corresponding therapeutic uses of TGF-ß and of the specific dendritic cell type in the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases and cancer. The conventional dendritic cells according to the invention are CD8+ conventional dendritic cells (CD8+ cDCs) and equivalents thereof (eCD8+ cDCs) in mouse and human.
