[Also in Division A4] A spoon having a built in thermometer comprises a bowl 11 connected to the handle 21 by a hollow stem 31, and a shaft 35 which extends along the stem 31 into a hollow core 22 in the handle, the shaft 35 being movable relative to the handle in response to temperature changes at the bowl 11, the movement being controlled by differential expansion of two parts of different coefficients of thermal expansion, and movement of the shaft 35 controlling relative movement of a calibrated scale and an index visible through a window 23 of glass or a plastics material in the handle 21. The bowl 11 is preferably of stainless steel and the thermometer comprises a spiral bimetallic element 37 which causes rotation of the shaft 35 as the temperature changes. The shaft 35 carries a spool 42 on a hub 43. A temperature scale is marked on the spool 42 and this is visible through the window 23 which carries an index line (not shown). In alternative embodiments the spool may be carried at the end of the shaft 35 remote from the bowl 11 and may be viewed through a thimble shaped window forming the end of the handle, or the spool may be replaced by a pointer mounted on the end of the shaft 35 and moving over a scale mounted on the end of the handle or on a window forming a cover for the end of the handle. The bimetallic element may be made of Registered Trade Mark "Invar" or a ceramic on the one hand and a metal such as brass on the other. |
